EPISODE 03 - Colorism
Episode 03 - Claudio Cabrera on Colorism
Rocio and Mercedes talk with writer Claudio Cabrera. In this episode, we talk about Claudio’s writing journey, the effects of Colorism, the importance of self-love, and therapy.
Claudio E. Cabrera is a Dominican-American award-winning journalist, audience development expert and commentator on colorism within Spanish speaking communities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
His journey in journalism began in 2006 for the country's oldest and most historic black newspaper, the New York Amsterdam News. At the New York Amsterdam News, he won an award from the Independent Press Association for his work uncovering the exorbitant rates New York State was charging impoverished families of inmates for phone calls to their loved ones. Over the last decade, while he still writes, he's moved into SEO which stands for Search Engine Optimization and has helped grow some of the biggest brands in the space such as InteractiveOne, Black Enterprise, CBS News and now the New York Times.
In 2013, he was named one of the country's top audience development experts by Folio Magazine and has taught and lectured in universities both domestically and in Latin America and Spain.
Currently, he is focusing on a yet to be titled book centered around colorism and race and his upbringing as a dark-skin Dominican in the communities of Washington Heights and Inwood in New York City.
